Deep Thoughts

...Miniskirts in summer: Perfect. Miniskirts in summer with boots: Not so much.
Diane did it at Cannes, but she's a supermodel and her shoes weren't exactly boots. They were peep-toe booties, which are basically just sandals with a bit of extra protection. Thing is, I've seen three girls around the city in the last week who--mind you, in the midst of a sweltering heat wave--were rocking full-on ankle boots with dresses.

Maybe they're not so crazy, and it's just the fact that the streets of New York are extra gritty in the summer and they're protecting their pedicures. Maybe they have yet to paint their toes...Maybe they thought it was going to rain, or had to walk from midtown to Battery Park on a Tuesday evening only to arrive at the wrong end of the park and miss the poetry reading but happen upon a production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night at sundown. Who knows.

I'm just not a fan of the look in summer.

UPDATE: Oh. Maybe this is why.

Tip Top

Head-to-toe prints are splattered all over the Resort 2013 collections. They remind me a bit of a grandmother, but I'm totally OK with that. Even the fabrics that are decidedly retro are kept cool with slinky cuts that feel anything but dowdy.

Mark My Words:

Oxblood, iridescence, shirt dresses, PVC

Seeing Celine

You could split hairs with the tailoring in Celine's 2013 Resort collection:

Resort 3.1

I'm not too young to remember the '90s well. It was the era that saw my introduction to fashion as an intensely personal and creative outlet. I got my first fashion magazine then (cool lime and angular cuts covered the thick pages of Bazaar back then); I started wearing a rainbow-colored African beanie; and, incidentally, I had a pet monkey Beanie Baby. And a hackey sack I never mastered.

But Phillip Lim has mastered all things Resort 2013. His collection is stocked with crisp lines reminiscent but not overtly '90s. Here are a few of my favorite things looks:

And let's call a few trends now:
a) pantsuits will continue to reign
b) we're still entertaining the idea that overalls can be chic
c) graphic--whether black & white in digitized prints--will dominate; it's only counterpoint the equally popular monochromatic trend

Goodbye, Galliano

Hello Raf Simons. The onetime designer at Jil Sanders (who was, word has it "unceremoniously dumped") is slipping into Christain Dior's shoes. I have to imagine they're satin and sporting a high heel, but if anyone could pull it off, it would be Raf. It'll be thrilling to see how this modern minimalist (with a rep as "probably the most influential menswear designer of the last decade") takes on the house that, in recent decades, has sent some seriously decrepit looks down the runway.

Galliano's Dior vs. Simon's Sander

And wait: Alber Elbaz said no to Dior?!
